-
- It would appear from the relative daily postings to the
- General and Music Digests that the primary use of the
- GUS is for Gaming.
-
- I'm asking subscribers to the Musician Digest to stand
- and and be heard! So, if you do not subscribe to the
- Musician Digest and use your GUS for music composition
- and/or performance please post a brief summary of what

- First of all, if you have the DOOM 1.3 beta and don't know what's going
- on with it, you have a pir8d version (I know such a pir8 version
- exists). Fortunetely for id and unfortunetely for pir8s everwhere, DOOM
- 1.3 has had it's GUS code completely removed for rewriting, and won't be
- available until the official release. Had you a legitimate copy (or even
- if you'd bothered to read the DOOM Mini-FAQ), you would know this.

- This is because the install.exe for the bonus disk can't
- detect an ultrasnd environment variable. Make sure that all
- the usual GUS things are in your autoexec.bat (ultrasnd set
- to you GUS configuration, ultradir set to your /ultrasnd directory,

- You cannot run setgus in Windows! It's a DOS-only util. It won't
- be able to access the GUS correctly since the Windows driver would

- You might have a bad link between your machine and orst. Try
- /mirror/ultrasound on garbo.uwasa.fi instead. It's a more complete
- mirror than orst, and is a major European archive and so tends to
- be more reliably connected.

- You use Mega-Em when a game supports Roland or General MIDI.
- You don't need to even think about Ultramid unless you manually
- insert GUS AIL or Sierra real-mode drivers into a game that

- If anything, the GUS, the Max, the Sound Canvas, the AWE32, etc. are
- "sample playback" devices as opposed to "true wavetable". "True
- wavetable" was in vogue at a time when memory was scarce and the
- samples used were no more than monocycles of waveforms a few dozen

- I'm running gustalker on my machine without any problems. And I don't

- this software is really cool. It is much better than Miracle, if
- you really want to learn.
- It comes with a midi conector, hooks up no problem to the gus.
- The program itself is very user friendly, and easy to use. You can use any MIDI
- keyboard (as far as I can tell).
- For the GUS, you need to load in the instrument patch, if you want
- playback through the MIDI, when being shown keys etc. Otherwise, it comes out
- the speakers of the line out jack.
- They also have sent me 2 upgrades, at no cost. The only glitch, is
- every once in a while a note is missed from the keyboard. This happens on a
- regular sound blaster also, using a different keyboard. So, this isn't a GUS
- problem. The occurs very infrequently,as of the last update.
- NOTE: This is a Windows program. So you can download files, and
- play the keyboard together.

- Well, I was cruising through wuarchive the other day and found this game demo
- called Theme Park (or something like that). I decided to check it out because
- it sounded cool. I went to the sound setup screen and what did I find? There
- was a choice for the GUS (and the crowd goes--yeah). Too bad the demo only
- had SB (notice that if you flip the letters around you get BS...how ironic)
- sound. But the readme file did say that the rest of the soundcards will be
- implemented in the real version. By the way, the choice for GUS said "Gravis
- Ultrasound FM". Isn't that an oxymoron or something, seeing as how the GUS is
- wavetable? Anyways, the game is made by BullFrog (of Syndicate fame). It's
- basically a Sim-Amusement Park game. The graphics look pretty good and it seems
- to be a fun game. Why did I write this in the first place? Who knows...I guess
- I was just bored. Later.
